 MODERN YOGA AS IT IS KNOWN IN THE WEST, TOOK OFF IN THE 1890'S AFTER INDIAN MONKS BEGAN TO SPREAD THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO THE WESTERN WORLD FOR THE FIRST TIME BUT LIKE MANY CULTURAL IMPORTS YOGA HAS MORPHED INTO SOMETHING ALMOST UNRECOGNISABLE FROM ITS ROOTS.

THERE IS WITH A PREOCCUPATION ON YOGA ASANA (YOGA POSTURES). YOGA IS ALMOST ALWAYS PORTRAYED AS SIMPLY A WORKOUT DONE ON A MAT - SOMETHING WHICH SIMPLY HELPS WITH FLEXIBILITY BUT THIS IS ONLY ONE PART OF THE JIGSAW.  YOGA IS A PRACTICE FOR HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, AN UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.

 

WHILST THE ORIGINAL PURPOSE OF YOGA POSTURES (ASANA) IS TO PHYSICALLY PREPARE THE BODY FOR SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT.  THESE DAYS PEOPLE COMMONLY UNDERSTAND YOGA TO FACILITATE HEALTH & WELLBEING.

AND SO, YOGA MAY START ON THE MAT BUT  IT IS JUST ONE PART OF THE STORY WHICH EXPLORES THE PHYSICAL BODY.  

 

EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN PERSONAL JOURNEY AND THE YOGA PATH UNFOLDS OVER TIME AND EXPERIENCE. WHEN YOU START TO EXPLORE YOUR MIND IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS AND YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOGA IS A COLLECTIVE PRACTICE WHICH ACTUALLY SERVES THE WIDER COMMUNITY.

WE MAY BECOME MORE TOLERANT, KINDER, THOUGHTFUL, NON-JUDGEMENTAL.
